Here at the Atlanta Sleep Medicine Clinic, we often emphasize the importance of healthy sleep habits. Apparently, the US government agrees. The government’s report on health objectives and goals over the next decade now features a section on sleep health.
Known as Healthy People 2020, the report was developed through a broad consultation process and built on the best scientific knowledge available. It is designed to be used by states, communities, professional organizations, and others to assit in developing programs that improve our nation’s health.
According to Healthy People, "Poor sleep health is a common problem with 25 percent of U.S. adults reporting insufficient sleep or rest at least 15 out of every 30 days." With so many individuals suffering from sleep problems, and with the understanding of how important sleep is to overall health, the government outlines goals in Healthy People to increase awareness and treatment of sleep-related issues.
ASMC is excited to see a number of objectives included in the report that we actively promote. The report includes objectives such as furthering biomedical sleep research, reducing the rate of vehicular crashes caused by drowsy driving, increasing the number of individuals with Obstructive Sleep Apnea symptoms who seek medical help, and increasing the number of high school students and adults who get a sufficient night's rest each night.
